Matt Belfi is a self-taught artist in the truest sense of the term. Painting, drawing and creating collages for over the last 30 years, he has transformed from a little kid sitting at the kitchen table working on his art projects, to the owner of graphic design shop hunched over a 100-year old wooden table working on his art projects.

Influenced by the likes of Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper John, and even Tim Burton, Belfi’s intricate collages fuse his love of graphic design with the inquisitive glances and whimsical hope of the young. His inspiration is found in the photographic memories of complete abandon and the shared conversations of childish nonsense.

In it’s current incarnation, Matt’s work combines the graphic immediacy of the written word and type with, scraps of found paper, and layer upon layer of painting and sketching. The result are characters born out of the simplest of moments, yet so full of emotion and life.

“After spending countless hours at my computer toiling over  magazine grids, typefaces, and the mandates of computer programs; I walk 6 feet from my digital arena and into my world of self-expression. There I escape to a realm of flying scraps of yesterday’s newspaper, wet paint, pencils, crayons, sticky fingers and bunny ears.”
